2008 alum Tim Campbell is the recipient of a residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris.
The Cite Internationale des Arts is an organization which is privately run and provides artists from all over the world with studio/living space and exhibition opportunities. Located in the heart of the Marais district, the original building houses studios where over 100 artists are working. The residency runs from February through late April 2009.

Tim is currently working out of Philadelphia, PA.

The highly anticipated inauguration of Conner Contemporary's new space is finally here.

Leigh Conner and Jamie Smith are delighted to announce the inauguration of 1358-60 Florida Avenue, NE as the new home of Conner Contemporary Art and *gogo art projects with an opening solo exhibition of new work by Leo Villareal and a group exhibition of recent work by Gallery Artists.

Campbell & Servilio @ SFOS 08

Last year’s S.F.O.S. (Sewing Factory Open Studios) event featured 21 visual artists and 7 live music acts on the rooftop of an industrial loft building in Bed-Stuy. This September, the roof will again be turned into a sculpture garden augmented by paintings and featuring live music. Although line-ups are still being finalized, Loop 2.4.3, who “reinvent percussion from the bones out” (NPR-Fresh Air), and have been described as “a really focused and thrilling percussive ride” (New-Noise.net), will headline the music stage and local artist Suzanne Boatenreiter will be curating the visual art. Other musical acts confirmed are CT songwriter Jonny Rodgers, NYC wordsmith Tom Burnett, and Hungarian pianist/keyboardist Istvan B’Racz, performing Phillip Glass along with original works. In addition to the curated art show, many artists who have studio space in the building will be offering open studios.

This show includes work from Tim Campbell ('08) and Sharon Servilio ('08).

Hackett’s recent work focuses on body language, physical traits, and specific characteristics of selected animals as a structure to develop various multimedia works. Growing from initial impulses such as heart rates, body language, bones, and fur, the work pushes and pulls between the synthetic and the natural suspended in ambiguous hypnotic manifestations.

Hackett uses painting to trap, isolate and transform sections of images both moving and stationary. Much like an electronic musician might sample a beat and transform it into something new, Hackett uses paint to “sample” part of an image and transform it according to the images anatomical clues. The result is an image that grows through a system of atmospheric channel-like extensions.

The installation, Hive Transmissions 9/13/08 – 10/11/08 positions the honeybee as performer. Hackett will organize the effects and channels that receive and transform sounds from the hive. These sounds are taken in real time and interpreted through effect processors creating a transition from the agitated state of the hive to the serene environment emerging from the system. The bees essentially perform a one month long set of ambient electronic music born from the sounds circulating through the hive.

Ryan Hackett graduated with an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute. He was a founding member of the DC artists’ collaborative Decatur Blue. Most recently Hackett’s work was featured in the exhibition Freaks of Nature at the Bronx River Art Center in New York and in a solo exhibition titled Evolutions of Paint and Sound at Spur Projects in Portola Valley, CA.

Project Room

Oberndorfer works from his own personal history growing up in suburban Middle America, without risk or rebellion, he remembers wondering what it would be like to step outside the boundaries of his “sugarcoated” lifestyle. He describes his childhood heroes as those who questioned propriety and were “not known for their sweet and pleasant exterior but for the strength, confidence and conviction that lies beneath.”

His paintings of roller derby girls explore their and his shared interest in stepping outside boundaries; Oberndorfer’s idolization comes from the derby girls’ success in redefining these boundaries. They reject the “sugar and spice and everything nice” role with courage and determination. Roller girls invent their own personas and pseudonyms that reveal their aspirations or essential qualities. They choose costumes that are sexy and cute while playing a damaging game that requires a tough body and mind. His works reflects the fierce beauty of the women and the delightful experience of watching them. The paintings themselves are mouthwatering in their candy inspired color schemes and the high quality of the work.

Cory Oberndorfer graduated with an MFA from American University. He was included in the WPA\C OPTIONS Biennial in 2007 and the Brightest Young Things Relaunch, in 2008.

QUART BAG: A Community Art Show

Inspired by the many things you can do with a quart bag, Civilian Art Projects and friends have invited 100 DC area artists to participate in a community art exhibition called Quart Bag. The exhibition provides an imaginative opportunity for artists to use thirty-two ounces of space within a plastic quart size bag. All works of art will be sold for $100 or less, providing an opportunity for all people to walk home with a piece of art that is FAA approved.

Conner Contemporary Art is very pleased to announce ACADEMY 2008, the eighth year of our annual invitational
survey dedicated to outstanding work by recent fine art graduates of regional college art programs.
The following artists were invited to exhibit: Geoffrey Aldridge, Jamie Andrew, Andrew Buckland, Robert Campoy,
Andrea Chung, Sarada Conaway, Cheraya Esters, Nathaniel Fink, Ryan Foti, Kenny George, Sara Hubbs, Stephanie
Kozemchak, Michelle McAuliffe, Wayde McIntosh, Carmen McLeod, Meg Mitchell, Diane Ramos, James Swainbank,
Kristoffer Tripplaar, Virginia Warwick and Aleksander Zhikulin. They are graduates of American University, Corcoran
College of + Design, Georgetown University, George Washington University, Maryland Institute College of Art,
University of Maryland and Virginia Commonwealth University.
The curators are ACADEMY exhibition founder and chief gallery Curator, Jamie Smith, gallery Director Leigh Conner
and Assistant Director Kristi Mathews. As in previous years, the curators attended BFA/MFA exhibitions between
December and June, viewing works in person to formulate a profile of area art programs. After consulting with artists,
they selected a group of works created in various media, including painting, video, sculpture, and photography, which
demonstrate individual achievement and represent vital currents in the fine art curricula of our region.

Because we are finishing our new gallery space renovation, ACADEMY 2008 will be held nearby at 1341 H Street, NE
(near the Atlas Theatre / Arts District). We appreciate the support of Taurus Development, who generously donated
the ground floor space at their new corporate headquarters.

Curator's Office is covering the gallery walls with paintings, drawings, and prints to help out Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontieres. Our goal is to raise at least $ 5,500, which could pay for an emergency health kit to care for 10,000 displaced people for three months. Together, we and art can make an important difference.

We are aware of the extreme and constant need in the world with crises affecting different parts of the globe on a weekly basis. One stellar charity, Doctors Without Borders / Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), is an international medical humanitarian organization created by doctors and journalists in France in 1971. Today, MSF provides aid in nearly 60 countries to people whose survival is threatened by violence, negligence, or catastrophe, primarily due to armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, exclusion from health care, or natural disasters. MSF provides independent, impartial assistance to those most in need. MSF reserves the right to speak out to bring attention to neglected crises, to challenge inadequacies or abuse of the aid system, and to advocate for improved medical treatments and protocols.
